Summer Internship - Thank You

Being part of was simply put: a great experience.

We all learned about different aspects of our personal lives, as well as the work place. We learned new values, such as the value of thank you, that can be used all throughout our lives, no matter where we are. The food was great, and those working around us were even better. Their advice about college, work, life, and just their welcoming attitude was very unexpected and therefore unique. This experience is one that will never be forgotten, and the only thing that can happen now is we move foward, but so does the program itself.

Thank you for your support, and I look foward to seeing everyone soon.

Thank You

Time dedication and hard work will lead to success. Good things happen when one puts time and effort into it to making progress. This summer defines success for me, because of all the hard work and thought I put into my work. I’m going to take every bit of advice into consideration, because it will help me in the near future.

I want to thank the Outsiders for organizing a great baseball program. I would also like to thank everyone at the Hearst Corporation for giving us this once in a life time opportunity as interns. This program is beneficial, because not every young Latino young man in the Bronx gets to have an opportunity like this. First, I would like to thank Coach Tony Reyes for his hard work and dedication to the team. I want to thank him for never letting us down and never giving up. Additionally, I want to thank John Finck for all of his hard work organizing games, tournaments, renting the van, and for supplying us with food. Next, I want to make a special thanks to Eve Burton for making all of this happens; this wouldn’t flow right without you and for making sure everyone is in school doing well. I would like to thank Jay D. Smith for being such a great boss throughout the summer and for pushing us all, especially me to strive towards my goals and work harder. I would like to thank Chris Frasier and Maureen Sheehan for working with us and keeping us on point with the books and SATS. Finally, thank you for everything I appreciate it and I will pay you back with good grades and hard work on and off the field.

Verdero Tournament –Outsiders vs. Team Verdero

On Sunday, August 9th, the tension was high and all eyes were on the field, as the host of the tournament played against the “ghost like” Outsiders. Many asked “who’s going to win? Who’s going to play in the championship game?” Both teams were undefeated, but one had to win, while the other would be sad. It was the climax game of the tournament and both teams were hungry for the win.

In the first inning, Angel “AJ” Arroyo puts the Outsiders on top with a three run homer over the huge left field wall. The game remains at a score of 3-0 until the third inning. On the mound for the Outsiders was Rowin Rodriguez, but he was taken out of the game when loaded the bases. Joseph Thompson entered the game and gave up two runs, on two blooper hits. After that, another run was scored by team Verdero on an error committed by the Outsider’s shortstop AJ. Additionally, a big hit was made in the clutch for team Verdero, after the possible inning ending grounder was misplayed by the shortstop, and they scored two more runs.

It was 5-3 in the fourth inning and the Outsiders were up to bat. Loading the bases easily, the Outsiders put the pressure on team Verdero’s pitching. Team Verdero walked Joseph Thompson and James Santiago to tie the game up for the Outsiders. Raiky Ortiz, a really hot bat for the Outsiders as of late, followed with a solid line drive single to the gate. Team Verdero gave the Outsiders another walk, but then ended the inning. This made the score 7-5.

In the sixth inning, Jesus Vasquez of the Outsiders hit a solo-homerun to put us up 8-5. Giovanni Cruz came in with a “K-Rod” state of mind as he threw an extra 5-10 mph more than his usual. He ended the game for the Outsiders with a very important save. The Outsiders are now in the Championship and will wait to face their opponent Tuesday, August 11.

Tough Games Call For Tough Players

After beating M&J, the Outsiders played one of the toughest teams in the Verdero Tournament, Throggs neck.

Playing the home team did not seem like a problem to starting pitcher Robert Ambrosino. Robert pitched a complete game only allowing two runs to score. The pitcher from the opposing team began to walk a lot of batters in the fourth inning. The Outsiders took advantage of that by scoring as many runs as they can.

The pitcher was quickly taken out, but this did not stop the red hot bats of the Outsiders. The Outsiders recognized the opportunity to score the runners, and did so by hitting the ball to the gap of right field. The Outsiders won their third game of the Verdero Tournament by the score of 8-2. The Outsiders became confident and feel we can win this tournament.

Outsider vs M&J

On Friday, August 8th, the Outsiders were confronted with one of their old rivals M&J.

Coach Tony profoundly reminded his team in order to win this game we had to hit well, execute on defense, and avoid mental errors. Pitcher Jesus Vasquez led the team on the field facing some of his old teammates from school. Vasquez started the game off with his blazing fastball that never seemed to slow down through out the inning. The Outsiders again faced a lefty pitcher, for the second time in a row at the tournament; but we were not fooled by the pitchers movement and scored one run in the first inning. With the score was 1-0 until Vasquez helped himself out by hitting a homerun. This provides us with another run for assurance.

However, in the next inning Vasquez walks a batter and gave up a homerun, this allowing M&J to score 2 runs. In the next inning the Outsiders scored eight more runs on walks and base hits. Miguel Oliveras hit the grand slam to wake his teammates up to hit.

The Outsiders won their second game of the tournament by the score of 10-2.

Verdero Tournament: The Opening

On Thursday, August 6th The Verdero Tournament began. Even though, it was getting late and we were getting tired, the beaming lights at Throgs Neck’s Senior Field kept us from snoozing, and made us a focused 16u team.

Before pre-game warm-ups, Coach Tony spoke to us about how we really need to play smarter baseball. It made me reminisce on all our lost games, and I realized that we didn’t win because of mental aspects of the game. It really got me focused and had the same effect on my teammates. Coach Tony decided to put Robert “Rob” Perez on the mound against the team from Castle Hill. Excellence was what our pitcher exhibited as he shut Castle Hill down. The game went on 0-0 until our third baseman Miguel Olivarez hit a solo-homerun blast over the huge green monster like gate in left field. He got the ball rolling for us, as we then scored one more run in the inning on a RBI ground ball to second base hit by Angel “AJ” Arroyo. Rob continued doing his thing and pitched the whole game, a 7 inning shutout.

Our bats kept generating runs as we scored three more in the game. We were executing hit and runs; playing smart baseball. Coach Tony’s speech really got us into the game and it showed as we seized a 5-0 victory from Castle Hill.

M&J was our next challenge on Friday the 7th.

Time for us to play some hardball!

Moving on

The Outsiders 16u team had lost a playoff game against Bronxchester and knew that if they lose again their season was going to be over. With no pressure the Outsiders went back to play the White Plains Tigers, after defeating them last week by a score of 3 to 1. The Tigers were shocked as the Outsiders walked onto the field, because we looked strong and most of all looked like a winning team. Warm ups were very intense, everyone watched as our team chemistry brought everyone’s state of mind together.

On the mound for the Outsiders was Nathaniel “Natha” Mercado, who threw a no hitter through four innings of work. In the top of the third inning, the Outsiders generated five runs with line drives that were being hit. In the top of the fifth inning, Natha told Coach Tony he couldn’t pitch anymore, due to a blood clot that appeared on his finger while pitching. Coach Tony brought in Giovanni “Gio” Cruz to close the game off for Natha. Gio came in throwing “fuego” as his team mates told him. Gio gave up no hits and finished the game for Natha as the Outsiders advance and play against Bronxchester with the score of 8 to 1.
